|
Martinique is an island located amongst the chain of
islands, which form the Lesser Antilles. The surface of 1100 km² is largely
covered by plants, trees, palm trees and in the northern part mainly with
a beautiful rainforest that contains many different trees, including mahogany,
bois canon and many, many others. The original name is Madinina that means
“Island of flowers”. A name, which stays for the many beautiful flowers
one finds on the island.
|
||||||
|
Being located at approximate 14° north, the island benefits
from a very stable climate with temperatures throughout the year, ranging
between 24°C at cold days to around 32°C on hot days.
|
During summer, there is the so-called rainy season,
with showers and sometimes stronger winds, which are normally throughout
the year in the range of a continuous breeze. This is also the so-called
Hurricane season, but normally Martinique is well spared from Hurricanes,
which normally pass the northerly islands like Antigua or Sint Maarten.

Waterfalls, small rivers, which are beautifully embedded
in the rainforest, are wonderful areas for de-contracting and/or exploring.
Well marked walkways in the rainforest and throughout the island, longing
the beautiful Atlantic coast, provide wonderful times.Waterfalls, small

Exploring the ruins of Saint Pierre, left from one of
the most deadly volcano eruptions, 8 of may 1902, known to mankind is
an experience of its own. Walking trough the calm city by foot, or using
the “Petite Train” to explore the town and the ruins, finishing the day
with a cool drink in one of the bars, located on the waterfront, is an
impressive experience.
|
||||||
|
Visiting the many beaches on the island for swimming
or just for sitting in the shadow of palm trees is a rewarding experience
and helps recharging your soul. Being able to choose from many different
types of beaches, white and yellow fine sand on the southern beaches,
black volcano sand on the northern Caribbean beaches changing to rocky
beaches on the Atlantic coast gives everyone the possibility to choose
the type of beach he likes. Calm off-road beaches, or beaches in front
of little fishing towns, with bars in close reach, give everyone the possibility
to choose what fits him best.

|
Last, but not least, there is the hustle and bustle
of the capital of Martinique, Fort de France, a city with around
100 000 inhabitants, located in the center of activity of Martinique.
Reachable by car using the modern highway, or leaving the car in one of
the calm cities across the Baie de Fort de France, Trois Ilets, Marina
de Pointe de Bout or Anse a l’Ane and using the ferry across the bay.
There you will find all types of clothing, French perfumes, Jewelry and
anything else your heart desires.
|
||||||
|
The highway goes east from Fort de France and passes
the modern International Airport in Le Lamentin, before splitting and
changing direction and to reach with one arm the southerly part of Martinique
and the Towns of Rivière Salée, Sainte Luce, Le Marin (with its big Marina)
and providing this way the main connection to the southern part. The other
arm continues in easterly direction to reach the towns of Le Robert, La
Trinité, Marigot, Basse Pointe and the northernmost part around the town
of Grande-Rivière, giving connections to the northern Atlantic part of
the island. Westwards from Fort de France leads the main road through
Schoelcher, Case-Pilote, Bellefontaine, Carbet and Saint Pierre to reach
its end shortly after the old fishing town of Prêcheur, serving the northern
Caribbean part of Martinique.

MARINAS & SHIPYARDS
|
||||||
|
The biggest Marina is located in Le Marin. There you
can go on day sailing trips around Martinique, or even on a trip to the
next island Saint Lucia.
|
Glass bottom boats are also there. You also can charter
a boat and go on a sailing trip with or without a captain.
|

|
In the same bay, there is also “CARENANTILLES” a big
shipyard for hauling out and all kinds of repairs. A Travel lift, capable
of lifting 45 tons and a Forklift capable of lifting 11 tons are available
to haul out all kinds of vessels. Also a big floating dry dock is there,
which can haul out big Vessels up to 150 feet in length and up to 45 feet
in width, weighing up to 700 tons. This is the Shipyard, we use mainly
to haul out vessels, where we do repairs and/or installations.
|
||||||
|
There is also a Marina located in Anse Mitan, the “Marina
de Pointe de Bout” a much smaller Marina, but nicely located in the center
of Martinique.
|
Other small Marinas are located in “Case-Pilote” – “Le
Francois” – “Le Robert” and three other Marinas in the Baie de Fort de
France, the “Club Neptune” and “Port Cohe” located near Le Lamentin and
the Airport and the YCM “Yacht Club de Martinique” in Fort de France.
